The Pick-up Artist

August 28, 2007 at 3:34 pm (Celbs and pop culture)

I have a new guilty pleasure.

Have you seen the Pick-up Artist on VH1?  When i saw the promos for this show, i went…ICK!

Now I am addicted.

The premise of the show is to take 8 guys who have no game with women, from a range of “always the friend,” to “45 year old virgin,” to “can’t talk to women, at all” and turn them into Master pick up artists.

Their teacher, guide, and judge during this process is a man called Mystery.  My first thought….LAME!  and seriously, not the kind of guy i would go for, AT ALL.  but i am entranced.  his charm comes through the television, and sucks you in.

It is formatted like reality shows before this, reward challenge, teach, and test.  The winner of the test every week gets to choose 2 wingmen.  all three are safe from elimination.

The winner gets some kind of prize money, and the chance to travel the world with Mystery and teach other people this method.

Really, they are basically being taught how to read people and body language, and how to come off as more attractive and confident.  it is interesting.

Joe D is my favorite, and i think he is adorable, and can pick me up anytime!

I think my reality TV obsession has gone too far…

Sir, is that a gun in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

August 28, 2007 at 3:14 pm (Work)

So the other night at work was yet another night of adventure.  I am trying to figure out who needs breaks and needs to go home when this conversation occurs:

Man in orange shirt: excuse me ma’am, are you a supervisor?

Me:Yes I am, how can I help you? (Have I mentioned i got a promotion?)

Man: I thought you should know that my youngest son just saw a man walk in with a gun in his pocket.

Me, In my head: Shit, shit, shit!

Me, out loud:  Ok, what door was it at?

Man: that one.

Me: what did he look like?  I need a description.

Man: short, heavyset, dark hair.

Me: anything else?

Man: um, no, i just thought you should know.

Me, in my head: well thanks for the vaugeness!!!

Me, out loud:  thank you for letting me know, i will let management know immediately.

now, i am the only supervisor around, so i radio management to call me in the office, and they do, i give them the description, and they go looking around the store for anyone matching this description.  they can’t find anyone.

In the meantime, someone came and returned a pellet gun in customer service. (do you see where this is headed yet?)

Now, the rest of this story is assumption, and hearsay, from the girl from customer service.

I guess the cops were called when i alerted management.  So the man with the exchanged pellet gun leaves the store, and is greeted by 2 cops, guns drawn. They get cuffed because they can’t produce a reciept, until they finally go inside to get a duplicate reciept, and they are ticked!!!

I can’t wait to read the police report on this one in the paper tomorrow…then maybe i will have more of the story.

Moral to this story: let a people greeter know when you are returning something.  thank you!

Fergalicious, Transforming, or Big Girls don’t cry in Las Vegas.

August 25, 2007 at 11:21 pm (Celbs and pop culture)

So, some background to this story.  There is a bar about 2 miles from my house, out in the country on a lake.  it is mostly locals, and some lake people.  My dad is pretty much there every night.  Ok, so now you have that background.

So, lets remember that i was at work last night.  night.from.hell.

So, my dad pulls in the driveway this morning to tell me this story.

They were at the bar last night when this little woman walks in with another guy and another girl.  And my dad’s wife says, “I think thats…”  and then in walks another familiar face.  Josh Duhamel.  You know, guy from the tv show Las Vegas, Transformers, AMAZINGLY HOT!!!

OK, another side story.  My sister has met him before with my dad and his wife, because my dad’s wife knows Josh’s dad, who has a lake cabin in the area where we live.  so hence, my dad’s wife knows Josh too.

So, the little lady who walked in right before him?  Fergie.  yes, as in Fergalicious, Black eyed Peas, music superstar Fergie.  and Josh’s girlfriend.

They had three drinks and then left, no one bothered them, but everyone was pretty much dying inside from what i understand.

And where was i?  Work.  So SAD!!! because i would have much rather been in the same room as Fergie and her Amazingly hot boyfriend.

oh yeah, and since i have heard Fergie on the radio like 3 times today, I scream every time: “She was 2 miles away from my house!!!”

This is a big, big deal for this town, and a little bar that half the people in town have no idea exists out in the country.

Oh well, at least I am star struck from a distance even though i wasn’t there.  And really, i probably would have made a fool of myself if i was.  I love stars, and all things pop culture.

Thats my exciting story for the day!  Who is the most famous person you have ever met?

Lookin’ Good

August 24, 2007 at 10:52 pm (Life, reflections)

Do you ever have that day where you feel like you look freakin amazing? Today was one of those days. Seriously, the stars aligned, and I had good hair, good makeup, and good clothes all in the same day.

It probably helped that i got to wear jeans today, which are my favorite wardrobe item. On the friday after payday, we get to wear jeans if we donate $1 to the Children’s Miracle network. I can totally handle that! Good cause, and I get to wear jeans!

So i could feel myself happier, more confident, and more sure of myself today. I had a little bounce in my step. I love days like that. granted, it all fell apart about 7:30, but that is work stuff. Work was miserable today, and that is all I have to say about that!

I wish every day could be a good hair, makeup, clothes day. But, there is humidty, lack of time, and wrinkles to deal with. but i hope it happens again soon!

Peace!

Write, rinse, repeat

August 23, 2007 at 10:09 pm (blogging)

I have not blogged with regularity for a really long time.  Part of this was because of life circumstance, part of it was writers block. and part of it was a huge sense of self-doubt.  Then today I had an epiphany.

I liked blogging because it gave me a chance to write.  and then i stopped doing something i liked, and therefore stopped doing something i could really improve on.  I need to blog more for me than for others to read.  if they want to read, well then that is fantastariffic.  and if you don’t, i am ok with that.

So here is to more regular blogging.  I can’t say it will all be good, but I am going to do my darnedest.  Suggestions are always welcome.

Also, I am in the process of building a new blog.  One for book reviews.  since i read an average of 2 books a week, i figure this would be a good place to share what I am reading as well as get great suggestions.  I like books.  So look for a link to that site soon!

Alright, i need to go put away my purchases that i got after work tonight.

Oh, but one quick work story.  I am standing today with the “board” (pretty much our cashier list, where they go, when their breaks are.)  This man looks at me and says: “you are a tall girl you know that?”

I say, “yes, i am aware.”(I am close to 5′ 10”)

“you must’ve played basketball.”

“nope, i am kind of athletically challenged, i am not very coordinated.”  (if you need an example, i can give you many!)

“well, that’s just a shame.”  he counters, and then walks away.

just a day in the life!

 Night!

Beloit College Mindset list

August 22, 2007 at 1:52 pm (things I love)

One of my favorite things about this time of year is the Beloit College Mindset list.  This list proflies college freshman, according to what their worldview is, compared to what things have happened in their life time.  Beliot has been doing this list for about 10 years, but I first became aware of it in 2000, the year that I was about to become a college freshman.  I saw the list in the paper, cut it out, and I have carried it around with me for years.  Beloit does make the point to say that these are generalizations, and will not be true of every incoming freshman student.

So, here is my list, for those of us who entered college in 2000, and graduated in 2004.  the list is based on the assumption that most incoming freshman were born in 1982.  I was born in 1981, so not all of this applies, but i think how we expirence history often has to do with school expirences.  my comments are in italics.

  1. Most students entering college this fall in the class of 2004, were born in 1982. Again, I was born in ’81
  2. Grace Kelly, Elvis Presley, Karen Carpenter, and the E.R.A. have always been dead.
  3. Kurt Cobain’s death was the “day the music died.”
  4. Somebody named George Bush has been on every national ticket, except one, since they were born.
  5. The Kennedy tragedy was a plane crash, not an assassination.
  6. Huckleberry Finn has always been a “banned book.” I read it.  but i know there was controversy around it.
  7. A “45” is a gun, not a record with a large hole in the center.  But thanks to my mother, i did know what a 45 was, because we had a whole box of them!
  8. They have no clue what the Beach Boys were talking about when they sang about a 409, and the Little Deuce Coupe.
  9. They have probably never lost anything in shag carpeting. First off, it kind of creeps me out that you can lose something in shag carpeting.  second, my carpet now is a “modfied shag”  i guess it is coming back!
  10. MASH and The Muppet Show have always been in re-runs. I had no idea that i watched the Muppets in reruns.  that is disappointing!
  11. Punk Rock is an activist movement, not a musical form.
  12. They have always bought telephones, rather than rent them from AT&T. Renting Telephones?
  13. The year they were born, AIDS was found to have killed 164 people; finding a cure for the new disease was designated a “top priority” for government-sponsored research.
  14. We have always been able to reproduce DNA in the laboratory.
  15. Wars begin and end quickly; peace-keeping missions go on forever.
  16. There have always been ATM machines.
  17. The President has always addressed the nation on the radio on Saturday.
  18. We have always been able to receive television signals by direct broadcast satellite.
  19. Cities have always been trying to ban the possession and sale of handguns.
  20. Watergate is as relevant to their lives as the Teapot Dome scandal.
  21. They have no idea that a “presidential scandal” once meant nothing more than Ronald Reagan taking President Carter’s briefing book in “Debategate.”
  22. They have never referred to Russia and China as “the Reds.”
  23. Toyotas and Hondas have always been made in the United States.
  24. There has always been a national holiday honoring Martin Luther King, Jr.
  25. Three Mile Island is ancient history, and nuclear accidents happen in other countries.
  26. Around-the-clock coverage of congress, public affairs, weather reports, and rock videos has always been available on cable.
  27. Senator Phil Gramm has always been a Republican.
  28. Women sailors have always been stationed on U.S. Navy ships.
  29. The year they were born, the New York Times announced that the “boom in video games,” a fad, had come to an end.
  30. Congress has been questioning computer intrusion into individuals’ personal lives since they were born.
  31. Bear Bryant has never coached at Alabama.
  32. They have always been able to afford Calvin Klein.
  33. Coors Beer has always been sold east of the Mississippi, eliminating the need for Burt Reynolds to outrun the authorities in the Smokey and the Bandit films. really, that is what those movies were about?
  34. They were born the same year that Ebony and Ivory lived in perfect harmony.
  35. The year they were born, Dustin Hoffman wore a dress and Julie Andrews wore a tuxedo.
  36. Elton John has only been heard on easy listening stations.
  37. Woodstock is a bird or a reunion, not a cultural touchstone.  yeah, but i was a wanna be hippie, so i knew about Woodstock
  38. They have never heard a phone “ring.”
  39. They never dressed up for a plane flight.  why would you dress up?
  40. Hurricanes have always had men’s and women’s names.
  41. Lawn darts have always been illegal. yeah, but we had some when i was little!
  42. “Coming out” parties celebrate more than debutantes.
  43. They only know Madonna singing American Pie. no way…Don McClean or nothing!  and yes, i am sure i spelled his name wrong!
  44. They neither know who Billy Joe was, nor wondered what he was doing on the Talahatchee Bridge.
  45. They never thought of Jane Fonda as “Hanoi Jane,” nor associated her with any revolution other than the “Fitness Revolution” videotape they may have found in the attic.
  46. The Osmonds are talk show hosts.
  47. They have never used a bottle of “White Out.” I have!
  48. If they vaguely remember the night the Berlin Wall fell, they are probably not sure why it was up in the first place. I do remember.  watching it on TV and talking about it to my dad, in terms an 8 year old could understand
  49. “Spam” and “cookies” are not necessarily foods.
  50. They feel more danger from having sex and being in school, than from possible nuclear war.

So that is my list.  and a lot of those ring very true for me.  Now, here is the list for the incoming freshman this year.  Most of these people are 8 years younger than me.  Again, my comments are in italics.

Most of the students entering College this fall, members of the Class of 2011, were born in 1989. For them, Alvin Ailey, Andrei Sakharov, Huey Newton, Emperor Hirohito, Ted Bundy, Abbie Hoffman, and Don the Beachcomber have always been dead.

Attention Customers and Associates…

August 6, 2007 at 10:51 pm (Work)

I got to make this announcement over the intercom yesterday:

“Attention Customers and Associates.  If you are the owner of a red pickup, license plate number blah blah blah, your vehicle has been spotted rolling through the parking lot.  Our stockmen were able to stop the vehicle, but we would appreciate you going to make sure your car is in park.  Thank you.”

just another crazy moment.

Broken

August 1, 2007 at 11:15 pm (Uncategorized)

Tonight I am broken-hearted.  I worked tonight, though news of the I 35W bridge collapse reached us.    This was always one of my favorite favorite streches of road into the Twin Cities from the south, as it reminded me of one of the crossings into Seattle from the east.

Minnesotans have a great sense of state pride.  We know that possibly anyone we know in the cities could have been affected.  This doesn’t just effect the metro area, but it will effect the whole state.  As i am watching the news tonight, my heart hurts.  I was just in the cities this weekend, and that idea of what if also enters your mind.

Please keep those effected in your thoughts and prayers.  i know they will be in mine tonight and in the future.
